Schaeffler hosted a high-level product training event in Istanbul.
At the event, Schaeffler experts provided product training to Simkan Otomotiv representatives and about 200 of its customers. The event created good synergies and an opportunity for all to exchange a wealth of information.
Schaeffler hosted the Simkan Otomotiv family and its customers at an event held at Crowne Plaza Istanbul Oryapark on October 19, 2017. Addressing a group of some 200 garage mechanics and retailers of Simkan Otomotiv, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket Country Director Abdullah Yavuz said, “At Schaeffler, we aim to further improve our leading position in the market by increasing customer satisfaction and brand perception. In this journey, strong customer relations stands out as the most important factor in achieving success. After a corporate presentation by Simkan Otomotiv Sales and Marketing Director Alpaslan Topçu, Schaeffler experts provided the attendees with product training and technical information. The program concluded with a dinner. The event played a vitally important role in opening direct lines of communication between Simkan Otomotiv, its customers, and Schaeffler representatives. The exchange of information paved the way for all to express themselves clearly and get the answers to their questions.
Cast Off for clean shipping
At the world’s leading international maritime trade fair, SMM, the specialist for electric drive and automation systems Baumüller is presenting its solutions for the clean drives of inland waterway vessels, yachts, ferries, offshore vessels, etc. from September 4-7, 2018. Baumüller will be represented in hall A5 at stand 107 with its offering for hybrid and fully electric ship drives. In this hall visitors can specifically find out more about the latest trends in the field of alternative drive systems.
Baumüller has been a specialist in electric drive and automation technology for decades and successfully uses its systems in numerous areas of mobile drive technology. With its broad range of services, from motors to converters and control units to diagnostic software or battery management systems, Baumüller offers interesting alternatives to traditional ship drives and paves the way for realistic solutions in the field of smart shipping.
Optimal Degree of Efficiency in the System
Lowering costs, reducing emissions and meeting new guidelines are all possible with fully electric solutions or diesel-electric hybrid drives from Baumüller. The serial hybrid is an attractive solution where a combustion engine drives the generator and the electric motors directly take over the drive of the ship propellers. The advantage here: A purely electric mode of operation is available here and the combustion engine is always operated at the optimum degree of efficiency with minimal consumption and emission of pollutants.
Products and Services – Certified for Shipping
Baumüller has adjusted its products and had them certified for shipbuilding in particular. The Nuremberg-based developers have thus equipped their high-torque DST2 engines with wing-mounts that make it much easier to integrate into the ship’s design. In addition, Lloyd’s Register confirmed that the high-torque engines meet the specific requirements of shipping. In addition to components and systems, the Baumüller Group offers project planning expertise and service concepts with a global service network and is thus a long-term partner for the entire life cycle of ship drives.
Baumüller has equipped ferries, inland waterway vessels, yachts, etc. with its solutions and thus offers a wealth of experience in the equipping or conversion of ships and offshore vessels.
Baumüller can also help shipbuilders and captains on a small scale. This is the case for example with the steam-powered traditional ship Prinz Heinrich in which a Baumüller disc rotor engine supports the power transmission to the rudder and thus makes maneuvering easier. Baumüller offers solutions for all main and auxiliary drives in all ship operation technology.
Signs pointing to expansion
AMB 2018 will be bigger than ever / Industry figures attest to the right time for investments.
Experts from the machining and metal-working industry will meet at AMB for the 19th time from 18 to 22 September 2018. More than 1,500 exhibitors will present their developments and innovations on a gross exhibition area of more than 120,000 square metres. There is every indication that AMB 2018 will be the biggest AMB ever. “With the new Paul Horn Hall (Hall 10), the special AMB show “Digital Way” and the related Congress, we have created ideal conditions to make AMB 2018 even larger and better,” said Ulrich Kromer von Baerle, CEO of Messe Stuttgart.
Sales markets in Germany and some parts of Europe are booming at present. The Council of Economic Experts, the so-called “Five Sages of Economy”, is predicting that gross domestic product in Germany and the eurozone will rise by 2.2 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively in 2018. Industry associations such as the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) expect production of machines and plant to increase by 3 per cent in real terms. “Exhibitors have confirmed to us that the capacities in the industry are currently running at the highest level since 2008. Now would be the right time to make necessary investments. AMB offers a unique platform in this respect since it enables exhibitors to present the latest state of the art and show what is now possible in regard to digitalisation in production,” said Gunnar Mey, Department Director Industry at Messe Stuttgart.
According to Reiner Fries, Sales Director at Schwäbisch Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH, AMB is a magnet for visitors and exhibitors alike: “Southern Germany is the country’s strongest region in terms of the production of machine tools and accessories. Every renowned manufacturer will be represented at AMB 2018. They will present genuine innovations and provide a good overview for investment decisions.“ Fries said that his company will exhibit fully automated machines as a highlight at AMB.
“AMB in Stuttgart is one of the most important exhibitions for our company since the entire industry meets there and the event therefore becomes an attraction for our target group. As the largest mechanical engineering exhibition in southern Germany, AMB is becoming increasingly more important due to its location in Stuttgart. It is the ideal counterpart to EMO. During AMB 2018 we will show our innovations from the machine portfolio in the area of universal machines and will present the GROB automation solutions.
Industry 4.0 will be a key topic in the context of our latest GROB-NET4Industry applications,” said Jochen Nahl, Sales Director.
Sales Manager Marcus Steudel also believes that now is the perfect time for investments and digitalisation in production. He summarised the exhibition focus of Schneeberger Maschinen AG as follows: “We will show the technically future-oriented level of grinding technology both from the aspect of mechanical engineering and in regard to the man-machine interface, and will present the entire range in our capacity as the manufacturer with the world’s largest spectrum of 5-axis grinding machines.
“The metal-cutting industry is faced with major challenges at present. We believe that AMB, as the leading exhibition in the metal-working industry, has the potential to provide fresh impetus for positive growth in sales. The Komet Group will again showcase a large number of innovative solutions and products at AMB 2018. Clear objective: to continuously give our customers suitable tools for increasing productivity. Visitors to our stand can expect to see efficient standard precision tools, project-related developments and digital products relating to metal-cutting and productivity,” said Marten Veenendaal, Marketing Manager of the Komet Group.
According to Dr. Michael Klinger, Managing Director of Seco Tools GmbH, the clear advantage of AMB is the extensive information which visitors obtain on the latest trends and development in the areas of machine tools and precision tools. “AMB also features a wide range of accompanying and special programmes in this respect. The target group-specific theme areas provide visitors to the exhibition with great value-added. This will certainly also have a positive effect on decisions to attend AMB that are made in the run-up to the event.” During AMB 2018 Seco Tools 2018 will focus on the presentation of innovative metal-cutting solutions and new consulting services which comprise the entire area of metal-cutting production.

It is now essential to show how business and production processes can be optimised in very specific terms. During AMB 2018 we will present comprehensive approaches with the emphasis on our system concept and our integrated range of services. We will exhibit different applications which have been implemented in practice and offer genuine added value.”
Andreas Walbert, Head of Marketing & Product Planning at Makino Europe GmbH, emphasised the ideal general conditions at AMB with the first-class transport connections and the modern trade fair centre. However, he also saw other advantages: “The expertise of the exhibitors and visitors is hard to beat. All the big names are present there. The contents of the exhibition stand is what counts rather than its size. And these contents are at an extremely high level.” He announced new product highlights and innovations from the area of Industry 4.0 since digitalisation of products and services is also right at the top of the agenda at Makino.
Switch to NSK ball screws saves €266,000 a year
In the framework of the company´s AIP added-value programme, NSK recently helped an automotive component manufacturer to optimise the drive systems in its machining centres, a move that led to six times greater service life and annual savings of approximately €266,000.
High temperatures, coolants, strong forces and high precision:
machine tools make exceptional demands on ball screws.
At a factory in Spain producing automotive brake systems for the global marketplace, some 117 ball screws facilitate linear motion and tool table/changer positioning in a large number of CNC machining centres. However, because of stringent requirements and tough environmental conditions, the ball screws have an average service life of only six months. As a consequence, unscheduled downtimes were causing considerable additional costs to be incurred.
The supplier asked NSK for its expert advice to help to reduce the downtime frequency. In these situations, NSK offers support to customers in the framework of its proven AIP programme. A team of company specialists duly investigated the raceways and lubrication conditions in three faulty linear drives in order to determine failure causes. The result: a combination of high loads, penetrating cutting fluids and high ambient temperatures was responsible for the short lifespan.
To counter these issues, NSK recommended using ball screws that have been specially developed for high speeds and loads. This product range features a customer-specific nut that is tailored exactly to the application and provides greater axial stiffness, not just of the ball screw, but the entire powertrain, thus increasing machine precision. Moreover, as preload is spread over several balls, service life is increased considerably.
As recommended by NSK, the ball screws were equipped with the company´s proprietary X1 high-performance seals. These seals prevent any cutting fluid from penetrating the linear system and stop the ball screw lubricant from contaminating the machining centre’s cutting fluid or coolant. The X1 seal also has excellent grease-retention capabilities.
Optimal lubrication of the ball screw in tough operating conditions is assured by using the K1 lubrication unit, which enables the lubricant’s useful life to be considerably prolonged, again contributing to lower maintenance costs.
On a trial basis, two of the new NSK ball screws were fitted to the machining centres in Spain. The results were highly successful: ball screw lifespan increased by a factor of six. Furthermore, since installation, there have been no more failures.
The automotive supplier can now benefit from lower spare part costs and, above all, from significantly less
production downtime: total yearly cost savings of approximately €266,000 have been achieved.
