Stromag Periflex tyre couplings minimise maintenance

Published

on

In many industrial environments the transmission of power through the drive train requires couplings that are able to carry high torque while also accommodating misalignment and vibration. Stromag’s range of Periflex® Shaft Couplings use a highly flexible, rubber-fabric “tyre” element to transmit up to 15,000 Nm of torque, while compensating for radial, axial and angular misalignment. Further, wear is limited to the rubber element to minimise the burden of maintenance.

Stromag, part of Altra Industrial Motion Corporation, is a leading global manufacturer of innovative power transmission components for industrial drivetrain applications. It has been manufacturing the Periflex® Shaft Coupling series since 1948, making continuous improvements to the design and performance through regular R&D investment. In fact, since the very first couplings were produced, Stromag has improved the nominal torque of the rubber used for the shaft tyre by almost 650%.

The “tyre coupling” design concept allows two shafts to be joined via the flexible rubber compound. This shaft tyre is able to absorb extremely large displacements in every direction with low restoring forces and without noticeable wear and tear. This protects against mechanical wear in the driving or driven components. The couplings are ideal for high impact applications in harsh industries such as steel production, paper mills, mining and ship building.

A further benefit of the design is simple installation and extremely low maintenance costs. The rubber tyre is held in place using corrosion resistant coupling hubs and pressure rings. During operation it is only the tyre that experiences wear and tear, meaning the metal components will not need replacing. When the rubber tyre has reached the end of its service life, it can be quickly replaced by releasing the pressure rings – there is no need to reposition the driving or driven shaft.

The Stromag shaft coupling series covers a torque range of 25 Nm to 15,000 Nm and is suitable for operation in temperatures ranging from -50°C to +80°C. The composition of the rubber tyre is available in two formats and different hub designs are available to suit many application requirements. Further, when specified correctly, the couplings comply with the requirements of ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU for use in potentially explosive environments: both above and below ground. Stromag’s team of expert engineers are available to offer specification, installation and maintenance support world wide to ensure that end-users are able to enjoy the maximum benefit from the design.

Altra engineered power transmission products are installed in a variety of applications including marine main propulsion, rail traction and generating sets.

Industrial Drive Solutions

Twiflex has developed a range of high-speed couplings, based on proven resilient coupling design principles, to meet the demands of industry around the world.

The capabilities of this Multi-Point series may be extended through custom configurations manufactured to suit customers’ specific requirements.

Multi-Point shaft assemblies, including the fixed length configuration, can accommodate axial movement as well as radial and angular misalignments. There are no wearing parts and no bearings as the shafts are self-supported. In their shortest form they become a ‘close-coupled’ assembly. The couplings may be supplied with UJ or CV type joints to provide more torsional flexibility than a traditional shaft assembly, or where it is necessary to reduce transmitted noise or provide damping

Ruland Manufacturing to Distribute Belden Universal Joints

Published

on

Ruland Manufacturing(link is external) and Belden Universal have agreed to further cooperation by offering Belden universal joints through Ruland’s eCommerce platform. Ruland will stock and make to order a wide variety of friction- and needle-bearing universal joints in alloy and stainless steel. The addition of universal joints gives Ruland a more complete power transmission offering to complement its existing line of zero-backlash couplings including: rigid, beam, bellows, controlflex, disc, jaw, slit, and oldham.

Universal joints will be available through Ruland’s eCommerce platform giving users access to 2D and 3D CAD files, full product specifications, live chat tech support with application specialists, pricing, and availability. Along with inventory on the most common sizes, Ruland will use its flexible manufacturing capabilities to make to order non-inventoried products to give Ruland and Belden customers greater than industry standard service levels

“Ruland and Belden have jointly owned an office in Germany for more than ten years. This is a natural expansion of our relationship together to provide a more expansive product range for Ruland customers,” said Bill Hewitson, President of Ruland. Nick Sainati, General Manager, of Belden commented, “Belden is excited to cooperate more closely with Ruland and have them as a distribution and remanufacturing partner for our standard universal joints.”

Nick Sainati joints Belden Universal from his brand management role at Starbucks’ Corporate Headquarters, where he aided the successful launch of its Evenings and Mercato programs by helping solve complex strategy and supply chain issues. Mr. Sainati began his career as an investment banking analyst and corporate finance professional, advising companies on mergers, acquisitions, capital raising, and financial reporting. He sharpened his entrepreneurial skills by establishing a wine distribution company. Mr. Sainati earned his MBA degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
